One of the most flavorful and healthy appetizers you can make is Hummus. Hummus is basically a Middle Eastern dish made by blending garbanzo beans, also known as chick peas, with tahini paste, garlic and lemon juice. Tahini paste is key in all of my Hummus recipes. What is it? It’s ground sesame seeds that has turned into a creamy paste. When you buy it, it will need to be stirred well because the oil will separate and float to the top. It will also need to be refrigerated after opening, but will keep fresh for a long time.
Even though hummus is made up of four basic ingredients, you can add other ingredients to give it a whole different flavor. This is by far my most popular hummus and most requested. It’s my Roasted Red Pepper Hummus. It’s super easy and all done in a food processor. Hummus in the stores can be a bit expensive, but once you know the basic ingredients and understand how easy it is to make, you’ll never buy it again!
Here’s how I make it.
Roasted Red Pepper Hummus
In the bowl of the food processor, put in the garbanzo beans, fresh squeezed lemon juice, garlic, parsley, tahini paste, roasted red peppers, jalapeno pepper, cumin salt and pepper. Put the lid on and lock it in place. Start out by pulsing to get it all incorporated. Then let it blend for about 30 seconds to a minute to get it to the consistency you want. There will still be a texture from the beans, but it should be thick like a dip.
If it’s too thick to your liking, drizzle in a little extra virgin olive oil while it’s processing. That will help loosen it up a bit.
What? You can’t see the ingredients? Oh My, I’ll have to redo the picture next time I make it… 🙂
We love to serve it with toasted pita bread cut in wedges.
And there you have it! Just too easy to make. I have literally been invited to a last minute get together and needed to throw something together quickly and made this. It’s always a hit! The ingredients are staples in my pantry and refrigerator, and I typically keep pita bread in the freezer.
